چکیده

What would it be like to walk into a real-life “Holodeck” or “Cerebro” and experience a stunning new world unlike anything seen before? Beyond this, what if we were able to experience hitherto unobservable aspects of nature, as environments into which the body cannot actually venture? In fact, these questions are on the minds of scientists and artists working together, right now, in the AlloSphere located in the California NanoSystems Institute at the University of California, Santa Barbara. We have in our hands an instrument that allows us to explore and interact with complex, high-dimensional data and systems—whether they be subatomic particles, the human brain, or entire synthetic ecosystems—as if they were fully immersive worlds.

Effect of Unfolding on the Spectral Statistics of Adjacency Matrices of Complex Networks

Random matrix theory is finding an increasing number of applications in the context of information theory and communication systems, especially in studying the properties of complex networks. Such properties include short-term and long-term correlation. We study the spectral fluctuations of the adjacency of networks using random-matrix theory. We consider the influence of the spectral unfolding...

Unfolding X-ray spectrum in the diagnostic range using the Monte Carlo Code MCNP5

Introduction: Unfolding X-ray spectrum is a powerful tool for quality control of X-ray tubes. Generally, the acquisition of the X-ray spectrum in diagnostic radiology departments is complicated and difficult due to high photon flux. Measurement of x ray spectra using radiation detectors could not be performed accurately, because of the pulse pile up. Therefore, indirect methods...

A stochastic immersed boundary method for fluid-structure dynamics at microscopic length scales

In modeling many biological systems, it is important to take into account the interaction of flexible structures with a fluid. At the length scale of cells and cell organelles, thermal fluctuations of the aqueous environment become significant. In this work it is shown how the immersed boundary method of (64) for modeling flexible structures immersed in a fluid can be extended to include therma...

Immersed and virtually embedded π1-injective surfaces in graph manifolds

We show that many 3-manifold groups have no nonabelian surface subgroups. For example, any link of an isolated complex surface singularity has this property. In fact, we determine the exact class of closed graph-manifolds which have no immersed 1 -injective surface of negative Euler characteristic. We also determine the class of closed graph manifolds which have no nite cover containing an embe...

Towards an Approach for Engineering Complex Systems: Agents and Agility

The way in which we use and conceive modern software systems is changing. Humans/users are becoming more and more immersed in today complex systems operation, systems interact in a dynamic fashion with the users and with changing and dynamic environments. New design paradigms are necessary. In this paper we propose a first insight to engineering complex physical systems by employing agility and...
